Lay Cistercians follow a Plan of Life which was written by our early
founders, with the council of our spiritual advisor from the Abbey of
Gethsemani. Our Plan of Life
CLICK HERE consists of prayer, meditation, study,
work, and spiritual reading which serve as a guide for Lay Cistercians in their
efforts to develop, in their secular life, a contemplative spirituality
according to the Cistercian tradition. Our hope is to deepen our relationship
with God through prayer and awareness of God's voice in the depths of our heart.
At present, our LCG community is organized into two branches of our family.
LCG Members:
"LCG members" are members who meet with a local community of other like-minded
LCG members and These local groups focus on specific aspects of Cistercian
spirituality in their group meetings and attempt a deeper level of study of
Cistercian life and spirituality through monthly discussions with other group
members. There is a 2-year formation period involved for candidates during
which they work with an assigned mentor. LCG members and candidates are expected
to attend/work with/ and contribute toward a local group. This contribution
could be in the form of contributing toward organizing monthly meetings, helping
with mailings, or perhaps a small donation to cover mailing expenses, etc.
Friends of LCG:
"Friends of LCG" work toward applying the Plan of Life in their own daily lives.
Friends of LCG are invited to receive the newsletter and participate in LCG web
discussion lists. There is no commitment involved in the "Friends of LCG" group
and there is no need to participate in a local community.
Both of these groups are designed so that inquirers can choose which level of
commitment to which they feel that God is calling them. They both maintain a
connection with the "Gethsemani family."
LCG Members and Friends of LCG are two expressions of the Lay
Cistercian life.
