+ Some of the more mysterious and yet revealing words of
St Matthew’s gospel are those we have just heard, Jesus warning the people "not
to make him known." This is in fulfillment of Isaiah where we read he says that
God’s servant "will not contend or cry out, nor will anyone hear his voice in
the
streets, that a bruised reed he will not break, a smoldering wick he will not
quench, until he brings justice to victory."
What is this justice Jesus brings to victory, do different from
the justice of a world based violence in which we we live. One of better answers
to this question, it seems to me, is Fr Louis’ or Merton’s reflection on Mary
that was read at the night office this morning. He says that
because Mary is "the most perfectly poor and the most perfectly hidden.., that
she can most
fully communicate to the rest of us the grace of the infinitely selfless God.
And we will most truly possess God when we have emptied
ourselves and become poor and hidden as she is, resembling him by resembling
her.
