We will hear from the prophet Jeremiah this morning of how before he was formed
in the womb, God knew him, of how before he was born God had dedicated him. By
reason of our Baptism, the same may be said of each of us. So let us reflect for
a moment on where we may fail to live in this knowledge of God, live the
dedicated life to which we have been called. Jesus teaching in
the synagogues, proclaiming the gospel, curing every disease and illness, finds
his heart "moved with pity" for his people. Isn't this what is needed in our
Church today, persons who amid all their activities, preoccupations and human
accomplishments, who are "moved with pity" by the trouble and abandonment of our
world today. Is it in sharpening our own spiritual vision of what is happening
all around us, sharpening our awareness of the enormous human longing that
remains frustrated, sharpening our vision of what is actually going on deep
within us, that enables us to be moved with Christ by the needs of our time, to
pray for vocations as we ought?
